Artist Interview - Danii Pollehn

Welcome Danii. Happy International Women's Month!

What does it mean to be a woman?

- Being a woman can mean something different every day. Women are extremely versatile and have to adapt to a body that is changing daily and over time. Women have a strong sense of identity. Our existence is an act of resistance alone, our bodies and actions, standing up for ourselves are politicised. In short I think women are badass - beautiful human beings, inspirational, strong and have the wisdom to be grateful for what we are but also are hungry for growth! To make the world more inclusive and open to new concepts of living, loving and purely existing!

With your artistic roots, and studies in fashion…. Could we ever see an entire botanical clothing range?
- Absolutely!I would love to work on patterns for clothing and homeware again!

With a style that naturally celebrates womanhood and the female form, your deck for FLICK falls perfectly with our IWM celebrations. Please could you tell us what inspired your deck, and which card(s) are your favourite designs?

- I wanted to display women in their daily lives, in situations of calmness and when they are celebrating their inner strengths. My favourites are the King of Clubs and King of Spades - love their confidence and attitude!

We are huge fans of the Monstera / cheese plant here at FLICK! What is your favourite house plant? How many do you have? Any tips on keeping your house plant happy?

- Can totally relate, I also love Monsteras and have about three of them! In total I think I still might have 20 but sadly lost like 60 to a bug problem in our previous apartment.

Favourite fruit?

- Oh actually I love most of them to be honest and cannot decide but probably would go with blueberries!

How do you create your patterns? What is the secret to an eye-catching design?

- Make sure you have at least five elements which will help keep the viewer's eye exploring. Also in my opinion a half drop repeat looks much nicer in most cases but it's a little more difficult to create but worth all the trouble.

Who is the most inspiring female in your art and life?
-
For me it's more the network of females I surround myself with rather than being inspired by one person. We are most powerful when we are strong, supportive and kind towards each other!

From your interesting collaborations, did you ever think you would be working on a project for a mobile game? Did you come across any particular challenges and what has been most special?
-
Never thought I could end up designing a card deck and feeling absolutely grateful and honoured for this opportunity! Thanks to Ian I felt very well prepared for all the challenges.

Do you play card games? If so, which is your favourite game?
-
Definitely Solitaire!
When do you feel your most free?
-
Travelling with just only one little backpack and nothing to worry about!
