Nolwenn Pe is a French artist whose work is rooted in the landscapes of her homeland and her love of painting en plein air. For A Year in the French Countryside, she hand-painted every card in gouache, unfolding a journey through four seasons, from golden summer fields to frosty winter mornings.

Inspired by places closest to her heart, coastal sunsets near her family, windswept holidays with friends, and the yellow roses her father planted, Nolwenn maps landscape and season onto the deck: Aces as mountains, Kings as forests, Queens as seacoasts, and Jacks as prairies, each with its own palette, time of day, and mood. Numeral cards bloom with seasonal flowers, including France’s lily of the valley, traditionally gifted on May 1st as a lucky charm, bringing a quiet sense of renewal to every hand.
