Aurélia Durand - Pt. 1

Bienvenue, Aurélia to the Flick Family. We’re so happy to have you here and your deck - A Colorful Game - which continues our Black History Month celebrations.

What does Black History Month mean personally for you?

- It’s a month where Black creatives have their work highlighted by big platforms, newspapers, libraries and more. It’s a way to discover new talent.

Flick features amazing creators all year round and is proud to have decks representing people and cultures worldwide. We celebrate beautiful Black hair, weirdo monsters, sweet treats, skulls and Black icons from history - but we can always do more. How can companies (especially with huge digital presence and power) better support diversity and inclusion?

- Companies could include more diversity within their own team, so the conversation starts internally before creating a campaign.

Your art shows the influences of your childhood and the different cultures in France, Réunion Island, and Denmark. Where would you like your art to go next?  Do you have more stories yet to share and important topics you want to cover?

- My work evolves as I grow. I don’t know what is next, I never planned what I would do. It's a series of unexpected events which lead me here today. I am excited to travel and discover new cultures for sure.

We’re honoured to join your impressive list of clients! Is there a dream client out there for you?

- I don’t have a dream client, I am more excited about the project. I like to work on murals, books or animations, it’s bigger and longer projects with a long-term impact.

What makes a project fun?

- I like to animate. It’s the funniest part of my work because after long hours of work, the drawings are moving and it gives me goosebumps.

Your art is inspired by music, cartoons and video games from the 90s - what’s the biggest thing that has changed since that time and keeps inspiring you?

- What has changed is me. I am not the kid who used to watch tv anymore. I am able to create my own narrative with my creative skills.

Who doesn’t love a bit of the video game Crash Bandicoot?! When was the last time you got a chance to play video games and what type of game do you enjoy?

- If I play any video game I won’t be able to stop. So I decided that instead, I would play making art so I don't waste my time then. haha

Your creativity and illustrations help unpack essential and sensitive issues in the bestselling books - ‘This Book is Anti-Racist’ and ‘This Book is Feminist’ - are you working on any more books? If you could illustrate any book in the world - what would it be?

- I am currently working on a book to explain what my job is and how I do it so I can inspire others to dare to be creative entrepreneurs. It will be out in December 2023 and my publisher is DK based in the UK.
